Kumari Full-Body Prosthetic Transformations
Working on the Malayalam-language mythological fantasy film “Kumari,” directed by Nirmal Sahadev and produced by The Fresh Lime Sodas, our team played a pivotal role in bringing the mystical world to life. Creating a range of prosthetics and makeups, we meticulously crafted pieces such as a bat-inspired demon, a blister-covered ground-dwelling demon, and a cursed man aging without mortality. These works of art were painted and assembled before our journey to southern India, where we shot in sacred ancient temples, dense jungles, and historic manors from the British colonial era. Acting not only as makeup artists but also as educators, we shared our expertise in makeup FX in a region where such practices were less common.
The challenges of India’s heat and humidity were compounded by the unexpected addition of wire-fighting scenes, introduced after the producers were impressed by the quality of the makeups coming from our trailer. Collaborating with prosthetic creators like Infected FX, Designs to Deceive, RBFX, and Tinsley Studio, and utilizing tools from IWATA Airbrush, Bdellium Tools, EBA Makeup, Black Lagoon Supply Co., Dental Distortions, and Primal Contacts, among others, we ensured the visual authenticity and resilience of our creations.
The film’s success speaks volumes, reaching the top spot on the UAE film charts and securing the third position in India. The global recognition included Netflix purchasing the film, and it garnered accolades such as Best Picture at SIFF, Sweden 2023, Best Picture at GTFF, Toronto, and an Award of Excellence Nomination at BCIFF, Paris. Additionally, our makeup work received acclaim, earning the Best Makeup award at the Kerala Film Critics Awards. This multifaceted project not only showcased our technical prowess but also demonstrated our adaptability in diverse cultural and climatic conditions.
